The largest lake in the Caucasus
Volcanic Lake Sevan, the „blue pearl of Armenia“, is 80 km long and up to 30 km wide. It lies at an altitude of 1916 meters above sea level and has a depth of several tens of meters. Some parts of the coast are popular recreational areas for residents of nearby Yerevan, and several interesting historic buildings overlook its surface.
Alaverdi
Currently, the easiest access to Armenia is from neighboring Georgia. The road to Lake Sevan leads through the city of Alaverdi. The buildings in the valley deeply cut between the mountains recall the socialist past, or even older.
Alaverdi
Above the city is an interesting Byzantine monastery, registered on the UNESCO list. There are many interesting tombstones in the neighboring cemetery, according to which the cause of death of the buried is often known. The city lies on the main route between Georgia and Armenia, so they are ready for potential tourists. Right in the cemetery, you will come across the sale of paintings.
Alaverdi
And one more thing is worth stopping here. Aviation fans will find a memorial to the legendary aircraft designer Artyom Ivanovich Mikoyan. Among other things, he designed the famous Mig-21 fighter.
Lake Sevan
We're at Lake Sevan. This small Armenian sea has a maximum depth of 86 meters, is surrounded by beautiful mountain ridges and is located on the NE of the capital Yerevan. There is a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside from the Sevanavank monastery. You can also take a ride on the lake to one of the boats – a somewhat more commercially oriented place.
Lake Sevan
Along the southwest shore of the lake, it is much calmer. There are somewhat old-fashioned beaches and buildings whose construction has been stopped.
Noratous
On the NW shore of Lake Sevan is the village of Noratous, near which is a relatively large cemetery of the same name. In addition to the current, there are also very old tombstones. An interesting place with interesting views.
SW coast
The further we move away from the capital, the more abandoned places we find. Here, too, it is nice and without crowds of tourists.
