Driving on the most famous coastal road in the USA
The fastest route between San Francisco and Los Angeles is on the inland highway. However, if you have more time and want to enjoy the beautiful coast, take the CA1 road along the famous Big Sur coast. You will see beautiful cliffs, beaches and the famous Bixby Bridge.
Follow the highway to the south
From San Francisco, first take the really wide freeway toward San Jose, but follow the signs for „Pacifica“ or CA1
San Pedro Rocks
After the town of Pacifica, you finally reach the coast. The first interesting view is on the rocks of San Pedro
View in the other direction
There is also a nice view from the viewpoint on the opposite side
Gray Whale Cove
Just a short walk away you will find three beautiful beaches next to each other. There is a large parking lot and from here you can go on a nice hike – climb Montara – North Peak (578m)
California coast
The CA1 road really runs most of the time along the coast, so there is still something to see
Endless California beaches
Most of the coast in these places is not built up, so the endless beaches are half empty
Monterey
We stopped for the night in the tourist town of Monterey. You can see a large marina, bathing otters and small jellyfish. Relaxing city for one early evening and night
Bixby Creek Bridge
The most interesting is the second day of this trip, when you will find 200 kilometers from Monterey to San Luis Obispo. The mountains here fall directly into the sea and it is a rough region with only minimal development. The biggest attraction, practically right from the region is the famous Bixby Creek Bridge
Hurricane Point view
The road then ascends to another great view – Hurricane Point view
Bixby Bridge from the vantage point
The view of the famous Bixby Bridge is also great
View of Point Sur
On the other hand, the view is worth it
Point Sur
The nice Peninsula Peninsula is also interesting. The road will then head inland for a while, then lead another tens of kilometers over the dramatic coast of Big Sur. You can also see Lafler Rocks, McWay Rocks and many more
