On the northeastern edge of the city, Fisherman's Wharf is home to one of the city's biggest tourist attractions. It is a vast harbor pier called Pier 39, where a lot of attractions, shops and restaurants are concentrated.
Amusement pier
The large pier in the north of the city, with restaurants, cafes, shops and attractions of all kinds, is one of the most popular places in San Francisco. Most of the attractions at Pier 39 resemble fairground entertainment. Every day there are performances by street singers, acrobats and other artists.
Fun for children and adults
A variety of entertainment attractions, dozens of restaurants and food stalls and almost a hundred shops and plenty of other attractions for children and adults have sprung up on the pier and its surroundings.
History of the pier
Pier 39 was built in 1939 and originally served as a harbor for fishing boats. In 1989, the pier underwent a total reconstruction and was transformed into a tourist attraction. Since then, it has become one of the most popular places in San Francisco.
Sea lion colony
The main attraction is a large colony of sea lions. They arrived at the pier in 1990, after a major earthquake in the area and the docks underwent renovations, and have settled there ever since. Sea lions found here plenty of food, protection from predators and comfortable places to rest.
The seals are protected and visitors can get up close and personal with them. Currently, there are more than 700 animals here.
Information board about the life of sea lions
There are information panels about the life of sea lions at the sea lion lookout.
Tourist attractions
There are many attractions in the area, including an aquarium, a museum, a merry-go-round, a mirror maze and a 7D cinema. In addition to the entertainment facilities, the pier also has many shops and restaurants, so visitors can buy souvenirs or enjoy lunch or dinner.
But during the day, everywhere is full of visitors and it is not always easy to avoid the crowds.
View of the bay
While walking along the edge of the pier, you can admire the view of the San Francisco Bay. Therefore, the place is also a popular place for walks, picnics and fishing.
