The largest bay on the west coast of the USA
This largest gulf along the west coast of the USA (excluding Alaska) has two main branches and is up to 97 km long and 19 km wide. Most of the bay is shallow, with only the approximately 100 km² area adjacent to the Golden Gate reaching depths greater than 10 m. San Francisco Bay is an important transportation hub, home to many industrial and agricultural businesses, and a popular tourist destination.
Cities around the bay
The entire area around the bay is densely populated with about 8 million inhabitants. The most important cities are San Francisco in the west, Oakland, Berkeley and Richmond in the east and San José in the south.
Science and Research Center
The entire area around the bay is famous as a center of science and research, as the famous Silicon Valley is located in the southernmost part of the bay. Many tech companies, including Google and Facebook, have set up headquarters here.
Bridges over the bay
The bay is crossed by a total of nine large bridges. The most famous of which is the Golden Gate Bridge leading across the Golden Gate Strait. In addition, an almost 6 km long railway tunnel crosses the bay
Islands
Inside the bay there are five larger islands. The largest of these is Alameda. But by far the most famous is Alcatraz Island, where the famous prison is located. The man-made Treasure Island is also interesting.
Recreation Area
The bay is also used for recreational purposes, it is surrounded by many beaches, parks, bike paths and other recreational facilities. It is a popular place for yachtsmen and kayakers.
Fishing
The bay is home to many species of fish, including salmon, herring, eel and mackerel. That is why you will meet fishermen in many places around the bay.
