Forgotten monastery
Almost everyone visiting Ladakh wants to see some of the many beautiful Buddhist monasteries. But only few tourists visit a small monastery in Stakne despite the fact that there are beautiful views of the Indus valley and much more famous Thiksey monastery. Moreover, there is almost divine peace and quiet.
Bridge over the Indus
Only about 25 km from Leh along the main road there is a turning over the shoddy bridge to a small cliff over the Indus, on which Stakne Monastery (3310 m asl) has been built.
Indus
Views from the monastery on the Indus river oasis in contrast to the mountainous desert are breathtaking.
Thiksey on the horizon
Far across the oasis it is possible to see „Little Potala“ alias the most famous monastery in the surroundings of Leh – Thiksey.
Mountains in Ladakh
Unreal number of side ridges decrease from the main ridge of Ladakh´s mountains. Snow caps lie here only until the beginning of the summer. Later the mountains look even more parched.
Stakna Gompa
The monastery itself is not quite as interesting as the views from it.
Headland
The monastery sits on a small cliff about 30 meters above the river.
Chorten
Chorten cannot be missing in any monastery.
Buddhist paintings
Interiors of monasteries are very nicely decorated with buddhist scenes.
