The chapel on the crest of the Eagle Mountains
About 15 km northeast of Rychnov nad Kněžnou, on the crest of the Eagle Mountains at an altitude of 1,037 m above sea level, there is an interesting sacred building. The Kunštát Chapel is an ideal destination for hikers who desire to combine a spiritual experience with the beauty of nature.
Chapel
This solitary chapel covered with a shingle roof is dedicated to the Visitation of the Virgin Mary.
The chapel served as a place of worship for woodworkers, who were mostly from the Tyrol and were invited to Orlické hory for work. They mined wood here and transported it along the rivers inland to the Kutnohorsk mines and to the local glassworks.
History
A baroque chapel with a circular layout was built on the ridge as early as 1760. In the 19th century, the chapel underwent extensive reconstruction and has been a place of pilgrimage ever since. The structure was devastated several times by adverse conditions on the ridge, but was always restored. The last extensive repair took place in 2004.
Interior
The interior of the chapel is quite modest, but it is all the more captivating with its simplicity and atmosphere. It is decorated with a simply carved wooden altar with a cross and a Pieta statue.
Protected area
The natural monument „U Kunštátská kaple“ with an area of 2.86 ha consists of a peat bog of the highland type.
The place was declared a protected area in 1973. Typical peat species grow here on a layer of peat with a maximum thickness of 1 meter, among the protected ones are, for example, the carnivorous round-leaved sundew, the common sedge, the gray-leaved sedge, and the mud sedge.
The way to the chapel
The way to the chapel is a pleasant walk through the forest along the ridge's red tourist mark. Since the road from Pěticestí leads around a bog, the path is often quite muddy.
