A popular peak of the Eagle Mountains with a lookout tower
On the crest of the Orlické Mountains, in the section between Deštný and Olešnica, the mountain Vrchmezí (Polish Orlica, German Hohe Mense) rises at a height of 1084 m.
It is a popular destination for tourists and cyclists. Tourist routes lead to the top from different directions, for example from Deštné in the Orlické hory, Rokytnice in the Orlické hory or Zieleńc in Poland. The easily accessible peak offers breathtaking panoramic views, a rich history and a newly built observation tower that attracts tourists from Bohemia and Poland.
Top
On the top platform there is a palouk, where there is a tourist signpost and a monument to important visitors.
In addition to the border with Poland, the peak also defines the watershed between the basins of the North and Baltic Seas.
Monument of important visitors
Since 2012, the stone monument has been commemorating prominent visitors to Vrchmezi – Emperor Josef II. (in 1779), American Ambassador to Prussia and later US President John Quincy Adams (in 1800).
Fryderyk Chopin
The most important Polish visitor was the famous music composer Fryderyk Chopin (in 1826).
Beautiful lattice lookout tower
On the eastern side, a little below the summit and just beyond the border, i.e. already in Poland, there is a freely accessible 25-meter high lookout tower. This beautiful wooden structure was opened to the public in 2021.
Breathtaking views
The viewing platform at a height of 18.5 meters offers amazing views of Kladsko and the Orlické, Stolové and Bystřické mountains.
Distant views
With good visibility, you can see as far as Kralický Sněžník, 38 km away. Even Sněžka, 61 km away, can be seen exceptionally.
Resting place
In the lower part of the observation tower there is a covered rest area with benches and a table.
