A cottage at the most famous and most visited peak of Orlické hor
On the crest of the Eagle Mountains, about 3.5 km northeast of Deštná, at an altitude of 1019 m above sea level, right on the border with Poland, there is a stylish tourist cabin.
The building has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 1958.
Excellent location
Due to its very convenient location for hiking and ski tourism, the beautiful view of Poland and Bohemia, and due to good accessibility, the cottage is one of the most visited in the Orlické Mountains. Less than four kilometers after the red tourist sign, there is a popular lookout tower on the highest peak of the Eagle Mountains – Velká Deštná.
A moving history
This mountain hut was built in 1924–25 by the Club of Czech Tourists from Hradec Králové. The cottage was opened to the public in the presence of writer Alois Jirásek on 14 September 1925.
On September 21, 1938, Masaryk's cottage was raided by German members of the Freikorps. Fortunately, the attempt to burn it did not work. At the beginning of October 1938, the cottage was evacuated. The Germans renamed the hut Hitlerbaude. During the war, families of fascist leaders were accommodated here, wounded pilots recovered here, and there was also a Hitler Youth center.
The cottage was liberated on 10 May 1945 by the Soviet Army. It was returned to its original name, unfortunately only until the early 1950s. Then the cottage was renamed the ČSTV cottage in Šerlich. Another double renaming took place in 1968, and finally, from 1990, it bears Masaryk's name again.
Bust of TG Masaryk
The Club of Czech Tourists called its cozy house Masaryk's cottage to strengthen the Czech spirit in the Germanized territory. In 1935, a bust of President TG Masaryk by Leoš Kubíček was unveiled on the staircase in front of the cottage.
Depending on which regime was in power, the president's bust was also placed and removed several times.
Accommodations
The cottage offers accommodation in two- to four-bed rooms as well as three tourist rooms with 7, 10 and 12 beds. The rooms are equipped with sinks. The bathroom with shower and toilet is on the floor. There is a common room, storage for bikes or skis and parking in front of the building.
Stylish restaurant
Masaryk's cottage is open year-round. In addition to accommodation, it operates a restaurant and provides all-day dining.
