Drass (sometimes written only as Dras) (3 094 m asl ) is located in the valley of the river of the same only a short way from „Line of Control“ (approx. 10km) dividing the former Big Kashmir to the Indian and Pakistani side. The town is located on the major road linking Srinagar and Leh, but only a few tourists get off here, even though is this place ideal for great hikes around the surrounding ridges and meadows with views of the Himalayan peaks.

The ascent path to the ridge above Drass is on the other side of the river Drass. The way to the bridge is easy – leads along the town mosque.

Bridge over the river river Drass

The river Drass has an amazing color. On the horizon you can see the twists of newly constructed road through the mountains to the town of Sankoo in the Suru valley – a potentially big shortcut to this valley bypassing Kargil. Only very few people walked across the ridge through the pass Umba la so far.

View of Drass

Once you cross the bridge, just walk along the path leading to a small village above Drass and then continue straight up to the ridge. The destination is clear, the terrain is not difficult – it's a pleasant trip. Already after a few altitude meters opens the view of the whole town of Drass. There is an old bridge and also a new road one for villages above the town. Along the white ridge on the horizon leads „Line of Control“ and there was Battle for Tiger Hill in Kargil war in 1999.

Comfortable ascent

The ascent itself is very pleasant; the hillside is covered only with grass and you can ascent basically any way you like. Use intuition to walk to the place from where you can get the most comfortably to the outlook ridge.

Drass valley

After less than two hours walk and about 500 altitude meters you are finally on the ridge, from where there is an absolutely fantastic view of the valley Drass. The famous peak of Tiger Hill is unfortunately in backlit, so it does not make much sense to take pictures. Interesting is a small gorge made by the river straight through the rock.

View to the southeast

The view from the ridge to the „other side“ is quite different – to the east is a deep gorge and the mountain ridge separating the valley of Drass from Suru…

View to the distance

This tiny ridge is only over a kilometer long and 3500–3600 meters above sea level. However, the views from it are amazing. Ratio views/effort made is high here.

You can get back along the pastoral path from its other end.
