Only few roads lead through the valley of river Santa over the ridge of Cordillera Blanca to the valley of Maranon. This one heading from of Huarazau to Chavin de Huantar is one of them. It culminates with tunnel Kahuish at the height of 4,516 meters above sea level. Right behind is pretty impressive statue of Christ looking into the valley. The biggest attraction on this journey is a pleasant stop at Lake Querococha. You will usually meet here tourist expeditions, which have a break during a day trip to the Inca ruins at Chavin.

Pampa under the mountains

After 40 kilometers of driving on the main road from Huaraz in the south direction the road turns and rises more than 500 vertical meters to a large upland pampa. The mountains are far on the horizon.

Lagoon Querococha

After another ten kilometers you come to a beautiful lake Querococha ( 4002 m asl ), where you can just enjoy the views of the surrounding mountains or take a ride on a boat. Sometimes you can see here also llamas. Two valleys connect at the lake – through one of them leads a road to the pass and further to Chavin and the other leads up to the mountain ridges and other small lagoons in a completely deserted landscape.
