Starting point to the dunes Erg Chigaga
The way to Mhamid, which lies at the end of N9 road, leads through desolate mountains Jbel Bani. Draa river flows in these areas only as a seasonal stream and the water is already practically gone in the summer. Mhamid itself lying just a few kilometers from the Algerian border is a popular starting point to the dunes of Erg Chigaga.
Road from Anagame
After you leave the pocket and nice Tinfou dunes, the road will lead you further to the south to even more desolate and arid landscape. Sand can be sometimes found here also on the narrow asphalt road.
Jbel Bani
On the horizon you can already see long mesa Jbel Bani that exceeds the surroundings by a few hundred meters, over which you have to get.
Way to the pass
The road use the place, where a small valley battled its way through the mountain.
The outlook from the mesa
From the table mountain Jbel Bani is a nice view of the barren stony and sandy plain with oases along the river Draa on the horizon.
Across the mesa
Before you get down to the desert plateau again, you have to ride through the interior of the mesa. Traffic around you is absolutely minimal. Here you are almost at the end of the Moroccan world.
Landscape near Mhamid
The road falls again to the desert plain after crossing the mesa. Just before Mhamid you can see the bushes fighting with sand dunes.
Mhamid
In some places in Mhamid it looks almost like the end of the world.
End of the road N9
N9 road ends in the wilderness, so if you want to go to the dunes of Erg Chigaga, you must have either an off road or arrange a ride with locals.
