The highest peak of the Šumava Mountains
Velký Javor (Großer Arber in German) is the highest peak of Šumava with its 1,456 meters. It lies a few kilometers beyond the German border, but is also a very popular destination for Czech visitors. It offers an interesting rocky alpine character and a panoramic view of the entire mountain range and nearby glacial lakes. Several lakes and streams originate on the mountain, surrounded by nature reserves and hiking trails, including demanding long-distance hikes.
Plateau
The peak is a plateau with four distinctive groups of rocks, which can be viewed as a royal crown. Velký Javor is almost entirely forested and the forest border ends at an altitude of around 1,400 meters.
Main peak
The main peak, located at an altitude of 1455.5 meters, is marked with a cross.
Weather and radar stations
At the top, two giant „soccer balls“ attract attention from afar. These are NATO radar stations and a meteorological station, which, due to their location, are crucial for monitoring airspace.
Cable car
A cable car runs to the summit all year round, with the upper station just below the summit.
Mountain Chapel
Near the main peak stands the Chapel of St. Bartholomew from 1956. The chapel represents spiritual symbolism and at the same time a reminder of Christian traditions in this area.
Views
In good visibility (especially during winter inversions), you will see not only the entire Šumava, but also the panorama of the Alps from Dachstein to Zugspitze.
Hiking
Velký Javor is a popular hiking destination due to its easy accessibility and well-maintained hiking trails.
Winter resort
On the slopes of Velký Javor there is a modern ski resort. Offering various slopes from moderate blue to the black track of the World Cup. A gondola lift, two chairlifts and three ski lifts serve to transport skiers.
Non-skiers can use the 1,200-meter long toboggan run, which can be reached by cable car.
