A short but beautiful sidetrip
The ascent to Tongariro volcano is the second possible sidetrip on the beautiful one-day hike Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Expect at least an hour's journey from the saddle by the red crater to the top of the volcano and back. However, the views of the opposite Ngauruhoe volcano are worth it.
Ascent path to Mount Tongariro
The ascent to Mount Tongariro begins at the crossroads of hiking trails at the Red Crater, about 1,850 meters above sea level. The path leads along the edge of a crater in a bizarre volcanic landscape.
View of the Blue Lake
At the ascent there are beautiful views of the Blue Lake.
View of Ngauruhoe Volcano
Of course, the view of Ngauruhoe volcano will attract you the most.
Exit road through volcanic landscape
The actual ascent path to the volcano is quite comfortable. You also have an elevation gain of only 130 meters for about a kilometer and a half. In addition, only a handful of people go on this side trip, so compared to the rest of the trek, it's quite intimate here.
Volcanic ridge
The volcanic ridge along which our path leads is colored by volcanic colors such as yellow, orange and red.
View from the top of Mount Tongariro
From the top of Mount Tongariro there is a beautiful view of the surrounding volcanic landscape. The way back is along the same route.
