Los Glaciares National Park, and especially its part around Fitz Roy, is perfect for amazing hiking in the dramatic Patagonian countryside. Everyone can really choose here according to their condition and nature.

Hiking circuits & Trekking

Petr Liška Wrote 07.11.2013:
  • Classic tourist circuit: contains two famous day tours: the Laguna de los Tres lying directly below the Fitz Roy and Torre lagoon.
  • Extended tourist circuit: adds even side trips to the lagoons Madre and Hija and glacial lakes Piedras Blancas. You can also do a short climb right from El Chalten at the prospect of Mirador de Las Aguilas and Mirador Cóndores where you'll see Fitz Roy nicely panoramically.
  • Trek around Fitz Roy: extremely difficult trek leading along Southern Patagonian ice field. It also connects trips to passes Marconi and Viento. Officially, this trek is only permitted with a guide.

Difficulty of hiking trails

Petr Liška Wrote 07.11.2013:
  • The basic tourist trails are without any problems.
  • However, if you go off the main road, expect a demanding mountain terrain with a possible wading rivers and streams.
  • If you go on the south Patagonian ice field you need to be familiar with walking on a glacier.

Support on the trek

Petr Liška Wrote 07.11.2013:

If you go to the far ends of the park, it is not out of the question to arrange a professional guide. It is even mandatory on the route around the Fitz Roy massif along the South Patagonian glacier field.

Maps and orientation in the landscape

Petr Liška Wrote 07.11.2013:

Maps: for the Chalten area there is a quality double-sided map at scales of 1:60 000 and 1: 100 000 with marked tourist circuits Signposts: there are signposts on tourist routes
