The second most popular half-day hike from El Chalten is to the lagoon Torre, above which rises the most difficult mountain throughout National Park Glaciares – Cerro Torre (3,102 m asl). The path to these towers leads through picturesque landscape modeled by glacier long ago. There is also a camp at the lagoon Torre and at the same time starting point to the South Patagonian ice field. The walk to the lagoon takes about three hours.

The picturesque area

At the western end of El Chalten the path rises into a wavy countryside of smoothed ridges and grassy meadows. The closest highest peak is Cerro dos Condores (710 m asl).

Cerro Solo (2 121 m asl )

After a while you get to a nice lookout of the beautiful peak Cerro Solo and also of the river canyon of Fitz Roy. Cerro Dos Condores looks from here like a nice, but meaningless hill. However, the view from its top can be very nice.

View of Cerro Torre and Fitz Roy

From the lookout is visible a small pass (610 m asl) at the northern foot of Cerro Dos Condores, where you have to ascent. On the horizon you can see your destination for today too – Cerro Torre. But it looks from a distance compared to Fitz Roy only like a little brother.

Dead forest

A bit unpleasant is the descent of more than 60 vertical meters down to the broad upland plain, as you will probably go back the same way. After more than two kilometers walk from the pass you will reach a crossroads. Here you can turn to an alternative path around the lagoon Madre and Fitz Roy. The surrounding forest is almost entirely dead and on the horizon you can see the moraine of lagoon Torre.

Lagoon Torre

The best in the whole trip is Laguna Torre (636 m asl) (to which falls Glacier Grande) hiding behind the moraine. If you have nice weather, you'll certainly agree that this is one of the most beautiful views that you can see in Patagonia.

Cerro Torre

This whole part of the ridge is actually four towers standing side by side, of which Cerro Torre is the highest.

Panorama of Glacier Grande

From the lagoon Torre you can make a short ascent to the moraine on the north side of the lake with a parade view of the entire ridge and glacier Grande. Walk to the other side of the lake is impossible without equipment. River Fitz Roy flows out from it and you do not have a chance to wade through it. There is only stretched a steel cable Tirolesa over it, which is used by local guides during the trips to the glacier Grande. It cannot be used without a harness. You can return back the same way or extend the walk with a trip around the lagoon Madre.
