The Zachatievsky Monastery is the oldest nunnery in Moscow. In its place originally stood a wooden church from 1360. The area gradually expanded and the monastery flourished until 1547 when it was destroyed by a large fire. It was restored in 1584. The monastery stands in a quiet part of town south of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, and although its main temple is one of the most beautiful in Moscow, many visitors to the city neglect it.
