Construction of the 540-meter-high Ostankin TV Tower began in 1963. Its author is the architect Nikolai Nikitin. In 5 years, after its opening, it has become the tallest building in the world. She maintained this title for almost a decade, until the opening of the CN Tower in Toronto. Today, it is the fourth tallest TV tower in the world and the tallest free-standing building in Europe. After a fire in 2000 that killed three people, the 55,000-tonne tower tilted slightly towards the city center. That's why the tower insured $ 114 million.
