Herðubreið with a height of 1682 m above sea level is the most significant Icelandic volcano. It is located in the interior of Iceland. Nearby is a small green oasis Herðubreiðarlindir, which is a nature reserve. At the foot of the mountain there is a shelter where the famous Icelandic bandit Fjalla-Eyvindur lived, who survived the harsh winter of 1774–1775. Icelanders consider this volcano to be their national mountain. The ascent to the volcano is less difficult, but it requires more special equipment – a helmet and in the period from October to 1/2 June also cats and ice ax.
