The Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve can be found at the very southeastern end of Bolivia. In and around this reserve, you will find the most breathtaking and almost surreal places in all of Bolivia. A high plateau with many volcanoes and lagoons is just part of the natural beauty that awaits you here. Let's take a look at the most beautiful places you can find in the Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve.

Laguna Colorada

Salar de Uyuni is the largest salt desert on the earth. It is, for example, twice larger than famous Great Salt Lake in Utah. It has 12 106 square kilometers, salt layer is between 2–20 meters and annually is mined 20,000 tons. In addition, there are interesting black rocks towering from salar like true „islands“. They are covered by several cacti. Dry salt makes interesting geometric polygons here. On the other hand, when is salar after rains full of water, it looks like an endless mirror.   continue reading

High-lying upland plain north of laguna Colorada is called Desierto de Siloli. It is clenched from both sides by the ridges of volcanoes. Its center and the most famous part is the group of isolated rocks, in the center of which is the most famous rock formation of the Bolivian Altiplano Arbol de Piedra. The most interesting volcano in the surroundings of this desert is volcano Inacaliri with its interesting crater lake. continue reading

Considering Bolivian Altiplano, Salar de Chiguana (3 700 m asl) is a relatively small salt plain measuring12×15km. It is surrounded by five thousand meters high volcanoes from all sides. Those coming here from salar de Uyuni usually do not even stop here, because they are already saturated with salty plains. However, if you come here from the other side, it is certainly worth at least a short stop. The view of the volcanoes behind the white plains is worth it. continue reading

Cerro Tunupa

Cerro Tunupa (5 321 m asl) is a mountain of salar de Uyuni. It is visible almost from everywhere. It's a type of volcano, which had lost almost its entire cone thanks to the massive explosion It now abounds with all the colors and there is a quite interesting view of it. If you plan the ascents on the Altiplano, it's an interesting acclimatization mountain. For tourists, however, only pre-summit (5 166 m asl) is easily accessible as the main peak is sharp rock on the other side of the crater. continue reading

Thanks to the smokey fumarole field a short distance from the top and relatively nice cone it is one of the easily identifiable peak lying just a short distance from the huge salar de Uyuni. Laguna Salada does not belong among the most distinctive and beautiful lagoons at Altiplano, and even though, tourists spend here quite enough time during their salar tours. The reason is that on its banks are thermal springs. The most famous of them is Thermal de Polque, where is also a small swimming pool. Walk along the banks of the lagoon, however, is also quite interesting. Frozen places are replaced here by those with bubbling boiling water.   continue reading
