One of the most beautiful lakes of the world Pangong Tso (4 250 m asl) (in Chinese written Bangong) situated just a few hours in a jeep west of Leh far behind Ladack mountains. It is also regarded as the greatest Himalayan lake. If you go here just for a day trip, it's then quite demanding and tedious. It is certainly better to sleep in a hostel or campsite and enjoy more the beautiful sceneries around the lake. It is also possible to take a bath in the lake

Near Pangong Tso

Although Pangong Tso is one the greatest attractions of Ladakh, only a few jeeps come here every day. The shores of the lake are inhospitable – arid and salted. The mountain range Pangong (small, but about 50 km long) with several six thousand high mountains lies to the south of the lake. You will see some of the glaciers of this mountain range also from the lake.

Scanty vegetation

Although life conditions are more than unfavorable here, you will find here a scanty vegetation that survives here. The most beautiful views of the lake and mountains that surround it are at the western end of the lake.

Photographer's paradise

One of the most popular places for photographers is interesting beach with green pond in the middle. You can have dozens of photos with different compositions from this place and you will then think over for a long time which one is the best :-)

Endless lake

The lake is in most of its length only about four kilometers wide, but it has a respectable 134 km in length. Third belongs to India /the best accessible part for tourists/, second third belongs to the disputed territory of Aksai Chin /territories belonging formerly under Ladakh, respectively India, now actually occupied by China/ and the rest belongs to Tibet.

Pangong mountain range

Trekkers have not yet explored the whole area too much, but there are endless number of ascent possibilities in the mountain range of Pangong. Jeep can take you farthest along the shore to the village Spangmik.

The north side of the lake

Most of the glacial peaks on the northern side of the lake already come under Aksai Chin. In fact, they are ones of the most remote parts of the world.

Nameless dominant

The western end of the lake is dominated by a nameless mountain at about (5 350 m asl), which will attract your eyes all the time of your visit to the lake. It would surely not be bad to climb here and enjoy the view of the lake.

Camp at the lake

A few hundred meters from the lake there is a tea tent on the arid shore, where you can get something delicious. There is also overpriced camp (considering ladack conditions).
