Historic city on the outskirts of Kathmandu

If you want to go on a short trip from Kathmandu to an interesting historic city, where there are no crowds of tourists, try Kirtipur, which is now a suburb of Kathmandu. Here you will find nice sights and also the remains of the original life
Road to Kirtipur
If you are staying in Thamel, like most visitors to Kathmandu, the best means of transport to Kirtipur is a taxi. It's about 10 kilometers here. It is ideal to set off here, for example, after visiting the Swayambhunath Stupa, which lies at the ring road of the city, and your journey will be significantly cheaper and shorter than directly from Thamel. Kirtipur is built on a hill around which also runs the Kirtipur Ring Road. We were dropped off at Naya Bazar at the eastern end of the city to walk the whole center from east to west. Most of the streets on the hill are very narrow, so mostly only motorcycles pass through here

The streets of Kirtipur
From Kirtipur Ring Road, we climb up the hill to disappear in the narrow streets after a while. You will see deep wells and dozens of small temples. All old houses in the center are made of local red bricks

Chilandeo Stupa
The first real attraction of this walk and at the same time one of the most beautiful places in the city is Chilandeo Stupa. A relatively large area, which is worth a more detailed tour

Crop drying
From the stupa it is about 300 meters to the very center of Kirtipur, which lies around the reservoir De Pukhu. On every free sunny patch there is a local dried crop

Bagh Bhairab Temple
The most famous monument of Kirtipur is undoubtedly the Bagh Bhairab temple, which is decorated with dozens of swords.

View of Kathmandu
From the temple there is a great view of Kathmandu, lying in the valley below you. If you are lucky enough to have good visibility, you will see the ridge of the Himalayas – Langtang on the horizon

Road to Uma Maheshwor temple
We continue to the highest point of Kirtipur – the temple of Uma Maheshwor.

Uma Maheshwor Temple
Uma Maheshwor Temple on the highest point of the city is decorated with sexual symbols. Who wants to be fertile should pray here :-)
Way back
From the temple, the stairs descend directly to the ring road with huge water tanks – unfortunately full of garbage. Even so, the locals catch fish in them. Better than going back to the beginning on a busy roundabout, it's a parallel street above it
