A tour of a half-forgotten city
Once one of the most important cities in Nepal and the center of the kingdom – Gorkha (1,084 m above sea level), located in the foothills of the mighty 8,000-meter Manaslu, is now almost forgotten for tourists. After the capital moved to Kathmandu, its era of power ended, but at least tourists went here on a trek around Manaslu. After completing the road to Arugat Bazar, however, they start from this much more practical place. If you still take a trip here, you can see several historic royal buildings, take a hike to the temple on a mountain ridge and in good conditions enjoy the view of the Manaslu ridge rising on the horizon.
Life in the town of Gorkha
Today, Gorkha is really just a provincial town. The shops here are colorful, especially before religious holidays.
The historic center of Gorkhy
Start your tour of Gorkha in the small historic center of the city, where there are pagoda temples – Magadev Than.
Typical folk building
The ridge to the castle is reached from the center by steep stairs. Almost three hundred meters await you. Along the way you will come across typical local houses.
Royal palace
After a tiring ascent, after all, it is very hot at this altitude, you will reach the royal palace, which is built in typical Newar architecture.
Palace buildings
The palace exhibited on a rocky ridge is surrounded by lush vegetation. There are several sightseeing routes. Unfortunately, most of the famous views are currently overgrown with vegetation, so there are fewer interesting views than before
Newar architecture
Newar architecture is characterized not only by bricks, but mainly by beautiful carvings.
Landscape around Gorkhy
The whole area around Gorkhy belongs to the Low Himalayas. The ridges full of rice fields lead in all directions.
View of the Manaslu massif
From Gorkha there is a famous view of the Manaslu massif. However, it is fifty kilometers as the crow flies, so it depends a lot on weather conditions. Quite often it is hidden behind the haze.
Views of Gorky
You can go back either the same way up the stairs, or a longer but more comfortable way down the ridge and then down the road. You will have nice views of the whole of Gorky huddled below you
