Amazing ancient mosaics inscribed on the UNESCO list
To the west of Paphos is the extensive Archaeological Park of Nea Paphos. It is a very important and very well-preserved ancient city. The most important monument here are the stunning mosaics, which are located on the floors of several preserved ancient houses.
Unique Paphos mosaics
In the ruins of several houses there are wonderfully preserved beautiful colorful mosaics from the time between the 2nd and 3rd century AD Thanks to its uniqueness, the whole area was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980.
Mosaics with scenes from Greek mythology
The remains of Roman villas from the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD were discovered in 1962 by a local farmer who plowed up his land and discovered an ancient mosaic.
Excavations on the sea shore
On the sea shore there is a large area of excavations with breathtaking sea views. It is a huge archeological park, occupying a wide promontory, washed on three sides by the sea.
Modern archeopark
The entrance to the archaeological park with an area of 162 ha is a short walk from the port fortress. Inside are the ruins of many majestic buildings of the vast ancient city. Archaeologists from different countries have been researching this area for a long time. The results of their research exceeded all expectations.
Duel of Thesa and Minotaur
One of the mosaics in Thesea's villa is dedicated to the duel of Thesea and Minotaur, it is arranged in a circle, which is surrounded by an ornament representing a labyrinth.
