This Buddhist temple is built around a tough rock formation in the south of the island of Sri Lanka. We can get here easily from Tangalle on our own motorcycle, tuk tuk or with our own driver.

Entrance to the temple

When we arrive at the place, we will be greeted in the parking lot in front of the temple by stallholders with red fruit or they will offer us objects for worshiping Buddhas (lotus flowers, sticks). This staircase will accompany us to enter the temple.

Buddhist tombstones

Around the stairs we can see small stupas. However, they are not classical stupas but monuments of important personalities of the temple.

The first floor of the temple

Right at the entrance to the temple we can see the first stupa and mysterious spaces carved into the rock. We will also find the first reclining buddha here.

The second floor of the temple

At the entrance to the temple, you may be greeted by an albino monk who will sell you a ticket to the temple for 500 Rupees. After a few dozen steps we walk to the second floor of the temple, where the stupa and the entrance to the temples with beautiful ceiling paintings and reclining buddhas dominate.

Buddhas

Under the rock opposite the first white stupa there is a building, which is again partly engraved in the rock, where we find a shrine with buddhas wherever you look. The paintings on the ceiling are really beautiful here.

Reclining Buddhas

An interesting feature of this temple complex is the number of reclining life-size buddhas.

Atypical stairs, which are engraved in the rock, lead to the next final floor.

It rises on top of the mountain

At the top of the mountain is a beautiful white stupa, which dominates the entire peak. We can experience a magical atmosphere here, especially with local people chanting mantras.

Whiteness of the stupa

The stupa is white and contrasts with the blue sky.

Behind the stupa you can meet the rock lookout, where a beautiful view of the whole region opens up to us.

Monkey

There is also a large group of macaques in the temple, who like different fruits. We recommend that you take some fruit with you to entice it. But it is necessary to pay attention to valuables such as a camera, mobile phone, etc.
