The most remarkable water structure in the USA
The Hoover Dam is a concrete dam on the Colorado River, on the border of the states of Arizona and Nevada in the United States. It is the largest dam in the US by concrete volume and the tallest concrete dam in North America. The dam is 220 meters high, 379 meters wide and 1.4 kilometers long. Its dam is 200 meters wide and 379 meters high. The Hoover Dam is one of the most significant engineering works of the 20th century. It is a symbol of American progress and resilience and is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the US.
An important engineering work of the 20th century.
The dam was built between 1931 and 1936 and is named after Herbert Hoover, the 31st President of the USA. In its time, it was the largest dam and the most powerful hydroelectric power plant in the world. It was also one of the most expensive buildings ever. The dam continues to be an important source of electricity for the surrounding states. Currently, 17 of them are operating with a total maximum output of 2074 MW.
Dam and bridge
The dam was also used for transportation across the Colorado River. After the construction of a new road bridge that connects the upper reaches of the canyon 500 meters downstream from the dam, the extremely busy crossing was closed to transit traffic, and today the dam is accessible to cars only from the Nevada side as a tourist access. The road to the dam descends through switchbacks and several steep and narrow turns, and cars are inspected before entering. The new bridge offers a beautiful view of the dam and the Colorado River.
A huge dam reservoir
The dam reservoir, Lake Mead, is the largest man-made body of water in the United States, with a maximum volume of retained water of nearly 35 km3. The swelling of the dam reservoir extends up to 186 km from the dam and its area is 640 km2. Lake Mead is a source of water for irrigation, drinking water and recreation.
