A show of socialist architecture
The center of Bishkek is located around the main square of Ala-Too on both sides of the wide boulevard Chuy. Here you will find practically only monuments of socialist realism in the form of massive cubic buildings and countless statues. Architecturally, it's probably not very valuable, but it serves very well to soak up the atmosphere of times past.
Manas and Historical Museum
Perhaps the most classic view in Bishkek is the northern part of Ala-Too Square with a statue of the national hero Manas, a huge flag column and honor guard, and a huge building of the State Historical Museum.
View over Ala-Too Square
There are dozens of fountains throughout the square, refreshing the local very dry air. With good visibility, you can see the south-glaciated mountains of four thousand Ala Archa mountains, about 50 km as the crow flies.
Statue of the hero Manas
One of the most important figures in Kyrgyzstan is Manas, whom you can see on horseback in almost every city, as well as Lenin. The actual epic about Manas is huge in scope and deals, of course, with his incredible heroic pieces.
State Historical Museum in Bishkek
The State Historical Museum in Bishkek looks more like a mausoleum from the outside. If you want to go through mostly socialist exhibits, this is the right place to spend some time.
Fountains in Ala-Too Square
The southern part of Ala-Too Square is full of fountains and flowers. The surrounding buildings evoke the architecture of the Silk Road, but a piece of history is missing for some greater charm.
The clock tower of the telecom building
From Ala-Too Square, take a stroll east along Chuy Street. Three blocks away, about 600 meters away is the building of a local telecom with the famous clock tower – Big Ben, Bisk.
Revolutionary Warriors Square
Just across the street north of the Telekom building is Revolutionary Warriors Square – there are several allegorical statues among the flowerbeds.
Square in front of the opera
Continue northeast to the opera house. Next to it is a square with a statue of the greatest Kyrgyz artist – Toktogula Satylganova. Just for fun – it is also depicted on a 100 Soma banknote.
Opera and Ballet Theater in Bishkek
The building of the Opera and Ballet Theater is definitely the most magnificent building in Bishkek. Unfortunately, its entire immediate vicinity serves as a parking lot, which takes away the whole scenery a bit in the beauty.
Bishkek fountains
Right next to the Opera House is a pretty nice fountain. This certainly cannot be denied to Bishkek, that it is full of greenery, flowers and countless fountains.
Victory Square
The eastern end of the city center is a large Victory Square with an area of about 400×150 meters. Wednesday is dominated by a huge monument with eternal fire. However, the surrounding buildings are no longer very prominent.
Ceremonies at the monument
Ceremonies are often held at the Victory Monument. It is a very important place for the local.
Government building
From Victory Square, head straight west. After about a kilometer you will reach the monumental government building. Along the way you can still relax in the Oak Park with a huge number of statues. Yes Bishkek is also a city of sculptures.
Statue of Lenin in Bishkek
When you turn around, a large statue of Lenin tucked behind the Historical Museum will rise at you. Yes, it used to be in front, but now there is Manas.
Panfilov Park
200 meters further west is the amusement park Panfilov, where there are fairground attractions and where you can eat cheap.
The White House in Bishkek
You can end the walk through the center of Bishkek at the White House – the president's residence located on the main city street called Chuy.
