Trip to Bánská Bystrica

Almost exactly in the center of Slovakia lies the beautiful historic town of Bánská Bystrica. At the same time, it belongs to the five largest cities in Slovakia. The center of the city is the SNP square, in the vicinity of which there are the most monuments worth visiting. You will find most of them in its northern part, where we will go.
Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Bánská Bystrica
We will start our tour of the city in the northern part of the historic center on the territory of the former castle grounds. Today it is dominated by the beautiful Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The church itself is built on the foundations of an older Romanesque church.

On the territory of the former castle there is also the original town hall, which today functions as a gallery.

The most beautiful building in the former castle area is undoubtedly the Barbican. The Klubovňa restaurant is also located here.

SNP square - upper part
We move just a few meters further to the upper part of the SNP square. Here are several monuments next to each other: the City Tower, the Cathedral of St. Francis Xavier and the beautiful Marian column

Probably the most beautiful view in the historical center of Bánská Bystrica is from the Marian Column in the direction of the Barbican.

We go for a walk on the sloping SNP square, where there are a number of nice historic town houses. There is also an interesting new town hall with a modern design. At the same time, it also contains city information.

In the lower part of the square there is a monument to the Soviet army, referring to the Second World War.
