Among the most visited and most important places in Krakow is the Wawel Royal Castle. The castle rises above the Vistula River and is a dominant feature of the entire area. It was probably founded in the 11th century, making it the oldest monument in the city. At the time when Krakow was the capital of Poland, Polish monarchs resided here.
