Nine thousand years ago, when rolling lava blocked the outflow of springs, a 14 km long lake was created, the largest in Iceland. It has a single outflow, the Sog River with three hydroelectric power plants. There are three small islands of volcanic origin. Abundant flocks of trout regulate insect populations. The adjacent flooded gorge Silfra was evaluated as one of the best places for deep diving in the world.
