According to television reports and news on the Internet showing the bloody violence with dozens of murders in the Mexican north it would seem that it is a country totally unsuitable for a visit. Classic areas south of Mexico City or even just Yucatan are however without major problems and good for travelling.

Natural disasters

  • Hurricanes: August-October is the Pacific and Caribbean coast hurricane season.

Dangerous people

  • Drug mafia: In states bordering with the USA is the heightened security situation due to violence between drug cartels.
  • Thieves and pickpockets: Foreigners are often robbed in Mexico City or other attractive tourist places. It is therefore recommended to keep money in several places, copy your documents and hide the copies in different places, walk in a group of more people and try to limit movement at night.
  • Anti-government rebels: In Chiapas operates Zapatista rebel movement and some areas of the country cannot be even visited.

Diseases and health problems

Altitude sickness: High altitude and dreaming associated mountain sickness can be encountered in Mexico, but basically only if you try to conquer the highest mountains in the country, such as Pico de Orizaba (5,636 meters above sea level). It is therefore good to first make an acclimatization ascent to lower peaks such as the volcano La Malinche (4,430 m above sea level)
