The village of Săpânţa is famous for its unique cemetery, which has earned the nickname „merry cemetery“ for its colorful tombstones. The cemetery is a popular tourist destination for its uniqueness.

Dominant of the cemetery

At first glance, a colorful church that dominates the cemetery fascinates a person in a cheerful cemetery. In Romania, almost all churches are always open to the public. However, masses are very common and frequented here, so it is not always possible to enter the church without a crowd.

Wooden headers

The cemetery is full of colorfully painted headings with carved portraits of the dead or paintings from their lives created at the request of their relatives and complemented by cheerful rivers.

Colored headers are carved and hand painted. The pictures show what was typical of a deceased person. It could be a depiction of a profession, hobbies, or, for example, the characteristics of a person – if, for example, it was a fleeting woman, it could be aptly depicted on the tombstone.

Local products

Săpânţa is also known for its handicrafts. The main road is lined with numerous stalls with lots of souvenirs, especially products of local women – skirts, scarves, blouses or blankets.

Wooden church

The church in the cheerful cemetery is not the only sacral monument in the village of Săpânţa. There is also a new wooden church, again widely used. At present, a large number of new churches are still being built in Romania, often very magnificent.
