When you go to Romania and look for interesting places to see, be sure not to miss the mud volcanoes. It is located in the southeast of Romania, in the county of Buzau. Two larger localities of mud volcanoes (Vulcanii Noroiosi) are located a few kilometers from the village of Berca (Paclele Mari and Paclele Mici) and the third, smallest is hidden behind the village of Beciu.

They are not volcanoes

Mud volcanoes are not really volcanoes. These are gas leaks, passing through aquifers of clayey mud, breaking from a depth of up to three kilometers. The gases take underground salt water and mud on their way to the surface. The gases escape out in the form of bubbles and the mud that springs with them forms craters similar to the real volcanic ones.

We step on the dragon's back

The mud dries out quickly outside, creating amazing, sometimes bizarre formations, slow-flowing muddy riverbeds and interesting dry layers, cracking and resembling dragon scales.

It's bubbling here

Each crater is a little different, in one the mud is thinner, more like very dirty water, in the other solid, dense, one bubbles faster, the other only a little, some have silver edges, it glitters salt that has dried in the sun and formed silvery white crust, another is more brownish, another is dark gray.

Each bubble bursts once

Even the one that looks like a woman's breasts.

A game of light and shadows or a strange angel

The most beautiful are the volcanoes in the late afternoon, when the sun is low over the horizon and floods the landscape with a pleasant warm light, the midday sun creates the appearance of gray-blue shades and increases the contrasts between light and shadow.

All you have to do is stop quietly and listen. You will hear a muted „blop – blop – blop“ and you will be caught. Then you will just try to catch another flicker with your hearing and you will look for the direction from which you hear it. You will find another volcano and behind your back you will hear another blop, a blop. Not only you but also your children will enjoy the volcanoes. It is an amazing natural spectacle that will engulf you.
