Transportation to national park Lauca is very simple and inexpensive. The bus on an international line to Arica in Chile leaves every morning from La Paz (of course, this is also true for reverse direction from Arica to La Paz).

  • If your destination is Lake Chungara you can be taken out of the bus at the campsite directly adjacent to the main road. You can also arrange transportation to the village of Parinacota from here with national park ranger´s car.
  • Village Parinacota is situated approximately 3.5 km from the main road La Paz – Arica. So if you do not hitchhike after getting off the bus, there would be no other choice than walk (for about 45 minutes).
  • Day tours also depart from Arica to Lake Chungara with a stop in Putre town, but it is not very recommended, because you will get within a moment from 0 to 4 500 meters above sea level and you will certainly not feel very well. Not for nothing is this trip called as vomiting tour. The visit from the Bolivian side is therefore considerably more practical.
