Sureanu is one of the least visited tourist places in Romania, the latest map of the mountains is from the 50s of the 20th century, tourist signs were last marked in a similar period and there is no longer a monument on the roads drawn on the map. The whole mountain range, on the other hand, is interspersed with separate farms, so you will meet a large number of domestic and their aggressive dogs. The crossing of the mountains can be enriched by several Celtic fortifications as well as caves or gorges.

1 day

How can you get lost quickly?

Since even the locals don't know much about this mountain range, it is quite difficult to get there. It is ideal to take the train to Petrosani and have the herd taken to the village of Ohaba-Ponour, I do not recommend using buses, they will take you to another village with a similar name. In the „village“ itself or rather a settlement, it is possible to discover the first attraction of this mountain range: Pestera Sura Mare. How to get there is an interesting pastime, you need to ask the hosts, who will send you to walk your neighbors along the wall to get to the entrance to the gorge, and yes you need to obey them, it's really there. The gorge is worth the effort, where to continue, it is necessary to go towards the next settlement Cioklovina, the question is how to get there, I can not answer you, because there is nothing easier than getting lost in this mountain range, my friends and I did not manage it slightly and determined we are between two fences and two groups of dogs and probably the bear had a way very close to the tents.

Yes, this is how you really get to the entrance to Pester Sura Mare

Pestera Sura Mare

Wading through the gorge is one of the most beautiful experiences, but I recommend leaving all things and also the pants at the beginning of the gorge, unless you want to keep everything wet and of course the only suitable shoes are sandals or go barefoot, as the water is in most cases up to the waist. Untouched nature and beautiful views are the reward for this suffering. The journey from the beginning to the end takes about 1 hour.

The end of the gorge is formed by such a beautiful cave, where it is possible to see, but it is necessary to choose the relatively dry summer months, not May after a few days of rain.

The view

A view of a beautiful meadow somewhere in the Surean Mountains, but where I will not reveal it, because we do not know how we got there.

Day 2

We don't know where we are. We don't know where we came from. We don't know wh

It is possible to be lucky and come quickly to the destination, but it is much more realistic to wander all day on the road and on the road, look for a source of drinking water and believe that you will reach your destination. Throughout the journey, however, one can enjoy beautiful views, unspoiled nature and at the same time accidentally discover the ruins of an old fortress: Cetatea Piatra Rosie. I don't know if it's legal, but you can sleep there very well.

Hooray for water

Finding water in this mountain range is not the easiest thing, this was one of the possibilities where it is possible, it is a well on the blue mark, but whether it is drinkable is not completely known, but a friend declared: „that a frog is swimming in the well, so the water must be drinkable … “

Farmhouse

One of the most beautiful places that could easily have turned into the most dangerous, as looking at this mountain hut, several aggressive dogs are starting to approach from afar.

Cetatea Piatra Rosie

„I won't climb up there at any cost, if the fortress is to be there, I'd rather sleep here under a rock“ Of course, after this message it could not go other than up there, of course by detour, just go right under the rock, climb over two fences and you are there, I definitely recommend this experience.

Lost day

Rain and fatigue can have a negative effect, so there is nothing easier than having enough, but I do not recommend going to another village, because if you want to sleep there, the locals will take you back to the middle of this valley, where there is only one guesthouse nearby and give to sleep there as well, the very nice owner will give you a bottle of homemade plum brandy free of charge for dinner, but the fact that you drink it whole does not count on it.

Day 4

Get company? No problem.

The transition to another former fortress of Sarmizegetusa Regia takes another day, but in this case you will move much more in civilization. Walking from one valley to another in both valleys there is a surprisingly asphalt road that will surprise you on the ridge, which has its big disadvantage in the form of aggressive dogs, but if you are accompanied by foreign dogs, it is not a problem and they can guide you. to protect.

The company

When the dogs decide to accompany you, you will not convince them otherwise, even if you want to, but if you want to be attacked by a clamp of other dogs and the first two will save you and „convince“ the dog from that clamp to join you so you feel like hugging me.

Sarmizegetusa Regia

A view of the fortress of Sarmizegetusa Regia, where you have to pay the entrance fee and also will not allow you to camp there, which means a large number of tourists and tourist attractions where not only domestic tourists but also tourists from Western Europe, the advantage is that from this place you can stop the car to civilization.

Bonus

Near the town of Petrosani, it is possible to visit the Cave Peštera Cave before entering the mountain range, which is short but very nice, and if you tell the administrator who sells tickets that you are from the Czech Republic, they will even let you go for free.

Bonus 2 (Cheile Băniței)

If you would like to spice it up even more, there is also the Cheile Băniței gorge near the cave, where you can get there by turning to Cabana Peşter Bolia, which is already running, at a disused petrol station and then climbing two fences. and one stream. Be careful not to wade this stream barefoot, because there are pieces of glass in it.
