To the east of the town of Turpan lies the more than 60-kilometer-long mountain ridge of the Fire Mountains. It got its name from the color of the rock – you will find mostly red and orange, which at sunset and sunrise really looks like fire. You can get here as part of a day trip from the city, although you would need significantly more time to properly explore the mountains.

Fiery Mountains - visitor center

The first, official stop of the trip to the Fire Mountains is on the south side of the ridge. There is a huge parking lot, a visitor center, lots of strange statues and a lot of Chinese tourists. However, they stop only here and thus have a tour of the mountains sold. Don't be disgusted with commerce – the other side of the mountains is beautiful and without people.

Camels

the only thing that can interest someone at the visitor center is the opportunity to ride / take a picture with a camel

Highway through the Fiery Mountains

The main ridge of the Fire Mountains is crossed by the G30 motorway. At the highway bridge over the river, you turn into the valley to the most beautiful places in these mountains.

Valley in the Mountains of Fire

The road to the interior of the Fire Mountains leads along a narrower asphalt road with a minimum of traffic.

Weathered slopes of the Mountains of Fire

The river slowly flows here under the weathered slopes of the Fire Mountains. Like all rivers, it does not end up in the sea, but in the Turfan Depression.

An oasis in the Mountains of Fire

What makes the greatest beauty of this place is the combination of orange rocks and a beautiful green oasis.

View of the Mountains of Fire

There is another official view of the Fiery Mountains in the places where the river turns and crosses a smaller rock ridge. There are also several other buildings and statues.

Statues under the dune

There are several statues just below the dune, unfortunately behind the fence.

Dunes in the Mountains of Fire

In the Mountains of Fire you can also enjoy perfect desert experiences. You can try to climb a huge sand dune or ride a camel on it.

Canyon view

Probably the most beautiful view on this trip is a view of the canyon. Back to Turfan it is about 40km and less than an hour's drive.
