The national park is bordered on all sides by the main roads (1,4,47 and 49), so it is very well accessible by passenger transport. It is 330km from Auckland and 315km from Wellington, so it is practically in the middle of the North Island. The nearest large city is Taupo 100km. Larger towns around the national park are Turangi, National park and Ohakune
