Novgorod (Russian Нóвгород), „New Town“, since 1999 officially Great Novgorod, the center of the Novgorod region, is one of the most ancient cities in Russia. It lies on a waterway by the Volkhov River, which connected the Baltic and Black Seas. Lake Iľmenské is located 6 km south of the town. The first mention of the existence of Novgorod comes from 862. In the Middle Ages, it was the center of Novgorod Russia. For the hardships that the city suffered during the German occupation during World War II, it was awarded the title „City of Hero“.
