Views of the largest canyon in the Pacific
Waimea Canyon, nicknamed the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” is one of Hawaii’s most impressive natural wonders. The thousand-foot-high walls play with shades of red and brown that contrast with the green of tropical vegetation. Formed by erosion and volcanic activity, the canyon offers breathtaking views and trails leading to waterfalls and into the heart of Kauai’s wilderness.
Waimea Canyon Lookout
The road leading to the canyon lookouts and further to Kokee State Park starts by the sea in the town of Waimea. During our visit there was road work and we had to take an extra detour through the town of Kekaha, further west on the island of Kauai. After about 25 kilometers of driving up at an altitude of about a thousand meters above sea level, the first famous lookout point for the canyon is the Waimea Canyon Lookout. You need to buy a ticket at the parking lot, but fortunately it is valid for all other stops. The view of the colorful canyon itself is breathtaking.
Clouds over the canyon
The situation and dramatic scenery here changes every moment depending on how the clouds move around. In general, it is best to set off early, for the best safety and good weather.
The colorful walls of Waimea Canyon
Why is the canyon so colorful? The base is made up of lava rocks of different ages, which contain different amounts of iron and other minerals. The oxidation of iron creates the typical red and rusty shades, while clay minerals and moisture add yellow, brown, or green tones. The vegetation then enhances the colors even more — the dry slopes are red and orange, the wetter parts covered with plants appear green. The result is a striking mosaic of colors that changes depending on the light and weather.
Unofficial prospect
When you leave Waimea Canyon Lookout, drive slower to avoid passing other roadside lookouts. It's definitely worth stopping, as you won't see the stunning Waipo'o Falls from the two official lookouts.
Waipo'o Falls
Waipo'o Falls is one of Kauai's most famous waterfalls, cascading over the edge of Waimea Canyon to a depth of approximately 240 meters. It can also be reached on foot along the Cliff Trail.
Waimea Canyon
Waimea Canyon is certainly one of the most beautiful places you can visit in Hawaii.
Pu'u Hinahina Lookout
The second official lookout with a large parking lot is Pu'u Hinahina Lookout. Here you have a direct view into the canyon.
Beautiful canyon
The viewpoint is also very nice, but we thought the first one and the views by the road were better.
Cliff trail
We originally planned to walk the Cliff Trail to the waterfall, but the path through the forest was quite muddy so we turned around relatively early – you need to have proper shoes for this walk.
