National park around the ancient monastery
Just a few tens of kilometers south of Dublin is the mountainous Wicklow National Park. At the end of a glacial valley, below two lakes, lies the ancient monastery of Glendalough
Road to Glendalough
From the center of Dublin, it is about 50 kilometers to Laragh at the eastern foot of the Wicklow Mountains. From here it is only two kilometers to Glendalough with large car parks. From here you can walk through the beautiful Irish countryside along a peat-colored river to the remains of a monastery.
The ruins of Glendalough
If you don't like cloudy rainy weather on your travels, then it's quite useful here. Medieval atmosphere as embroidered.
St Kevin's kitchen
The best preserved stone building is the kitchen of St. Kevin.
Cemetery in Glendalough
The local cemetery is also well overgrown.
Upper Lake Glendalough
The actual tour of Glendalough is relatively short, but it is a starting point for a number of great hiking trails. The lightest lead around the Lower and Upper Lakes.
Glacial Upper Lake
The whole valley is of glacial origin, which can be seen on the rough surrounding rock walls.
Reefert Church
Probably the shortest walk from Upper Lake is to the ruins of Reefert Church
Poulanass waterfall
The road continues to a small gorge with Poulanass waterfall
Lower Lake Glendalough
You will return to the car along the Lower Lake.
What next?
If you wish at least relatively nice weather and you have more time, there is a beautiful all-day hike, where you will continue from the waterfall to the rock ridge. From there you will continue high above the Upper Lake until the beginning of the valley and back descent on the other side around the lake.
