Ascent in volcanic clouds
The second most popular short hike in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park is the ascent to the Bromo volcano, which made this national park famous. You can go on this tour directly from the visitor center, but it is much better to climb Bromo Viewpoint first and then continue on your own Bromo, you will make a nice circuit. The hike along the edge of the crater from which the clouds of gas rise is worth it, although you may not always feel completely safe.
Meadows near Broma
If you go to Bromo after visiting the viewpoint, you must first descend from the agricultural plateau a hundred meters below to the very bottom of the caldera. Surprisingly, in the beginning you do not walk on the volcanic dust, as you might expect, but on a grassy meadow. Routes lead you directly to the volcano.
Green walls of the caldera
Looking back, you can see the massive walls of the caldera, which in some places exceed the bottom by up to 600 meters.
Mount Batok
Directly in front of Brom, a beautifully symmetrical but already extinct volcano Batok rises from the volcanic plain. For those who have more time, climbing this volcano can be an interesting sidetrip for him.
Start of the ascent to Bromo
After passing the Pura Luhur Poten temple, hobbies will definitely come to you, offering a ride to the volcano or back to the visitor center. Prices are relatively high. It is possible to bargain and if there are no more tourists it is possible to get a really good price. Then comes the ascent itself along a relatively well-groomed path directly up to the volcano.
Mordor
The ascent to Bromo itself is like a march by Mordor from the Lord of the Ring. Incredible how you can get from a world teeming with greenery to a completely dead landscape in no time. Of course, it is sensible to go on this hike early, as around 9 o'clock the clouds begin to spill over the wall of the caldera.
Horse station
After a short five minutes of ascent, you are at the place where the most horses are waiting for your customers. From here you go to the top by stairs. Without it, it would be a struggle with volcanic rubble and dust.
View of Broma crater
So you are finally rewarded with a view of hell – a view into the crater of the still active Bromo volcano opens up in front of you.
Road to the top of Broma
However, the view of the crater fortified with railings is definitely not the top, but a place where most tourists end the tour. If you want to go even higher, all you have to do is climb carefully along a narrow path along the edge of the craters. However, staggering and falling into a crater is probably the last thing you want to experience in Indonesia.
Road along the Broma ridge
The path along the ridge is relatively airy, but not significantly dangerous if you do not suffer from dizziness.
A saddle between Brom and Batok
A short distance away is a saddle between the two volcanoes. However, the terrain of weathered ridges is not ideal for a possible climb to the adjacent volcano.
View from the top of the volcano
From the top of the volcano is a nice view back to the nearby Batok, into the interior of the crater. The worst thing about the whole hike along the ridge is when the wind turns and you disappear in volcanic sulfur fumes.
Continuation of the ridge
From the top of Brom, you will probably return the same way and either walk to the visitor center on your own or let yourself be taken on horseback. Alternatively, you can continue further along the ridge to other lookout points.
