A walk through the village of Kastro
The oldest village on Thassos
In the interior of Thassos you will come across several mountain villages. Perhaps the most interesting and certainly the oldest of them is Kastro, which you can find above the resort of Limenaria (approx. 12 kilometers drive on a wide and decent asphalt road). The village is located at an altitude of almost 500 meters above sea level. The village is almost completely abandoned – only two families currently live here. One of them runs a tavern, so you can also have refreshments here.
Beautiful stone houses in Kastro
You can park right on the edge of Kastra or you can drive all the way to the center of the village to the tavern. The village itself is located on top of a flat hill, so the local houses are built between rocks. The beautiful stone roofs here will certainly captivate you.
Views of the region
From Kastro there are beautiful views of the surrounding mountains, including the highest peak of the island – Ipsario.

In the place of the former castle, of which only the remains of the walls remain to this day, stands a picturesque little church – the most frequent destination of a walk around the Kastro.

Kastro is a truly romantic village. You can only imagine how it used to be here.

Here you will find several beautiful trees growing from the otherwise sparse vegetation of this peak.

View to the south
In the southern direction, you can see almost all the way to the sea. Elongated ridges separating individual valleys stretch there. At this point, you will only recognize the tactical location of the former castle.
Abandoned buildings in Kastro
In Kastro you will find only a few well-maintained houses, most of them have been abandoned for decades – this in turn adds to the interest and special atmosphere here.
Center Kastra
In the very center of the village you will find a small square with a souvenir shop, another church and a little further on a tavern where you can have refreshments.

The last interesting thing in Kastro are several huge beautiful ancient trees that have seen the village in its full glory.
