Leh (3520 m asl), the former capital of the Ladakh kingdom (land of high passes), lies at the crossroads of ancient trade routes to Tibet and Kashmir. It offers not only nice walks around the old town with a large royal palace, but mainly beautiful views of the icy ridge of Stok Kangri behind Indus valley on the horizon and even more parched Ladakh´s mountains in the north. It is an ideal starting point for short trips around many Buddhist monasteries in the Indus valley and perfect base for much more challenging walks. Busy touristic summers are regularly replaced with cold and quiet winters, when it is possible to meditate virtually without any tourists here.
