If you want to undertake a little more adventurous half-day hike in Passu, it is best to walk from the glacier Passu to lake Borit lying above the village of Hussaini. You can admire the views of two glaciers and two different lakes during this hike. But the path is in some places not very clear and you will need your own intuition. But on the other hand, you cannot lose your way completely. To the north from you is a wall of Karakorum and to the south Karakorum Highway, where you can run down if you get lost on the upland plain between glaciers. Earlier this trek led even further to the bridge of „Indiana Jones“, but everything has disappeared under the waters of Lake Attabad.

Start of the trek

It is very simple to find the beginning of the trek – the start is from the bridge on KKH from fierce river Passu, which is curiously long only two kilometers (from glacial lake to the mouth into Hunza River). Just a bit further is restaurant Glacier Breeze, where you can possibly ask about the right way. In the distance you can see the impressive ridge of Karakorum.

Panorama of Passu

Just walk a few meters up, turn around and before you is a beautiful panorama of oasis of village Passu as well as an impressive jagged cathedrals towering above the River Hunza.

Lake Passu

After 20 minutes’ walk from KKH you will see the first attraction of this trip – glacial lake Passu (2 560 m asl), in which ends 18 km long glacier Passu flowing down from the mountains Shispare Sar (7 611 m asl) and Passu Sar (7 478 m asl) – the peaks of renowned impenetrable ridge of "wall " Batura.

Passu glacier

Then follows the most difficult part of the whole trip – ascent to the moraine. You'll probably have to use your intuition to decide, what the best way up is, because some paths appear for a moment and then later disappear. The slope is loose, so you need to be careful not to fall down.

The top before Passu Sar (7 478 m asl)

Unpleasant ascent to the moraine offers views of about 7 000 meters high mountain top before Passu Sar. To the left above insignificant ridge separating the glaciers towers just the tip of the amazing mountains Shispare Sar.

View of the valley of Hunza

Once you scramble high enough to the moraine, the fantastic view back into the valley of Hunza River opens. In the gap between the spiky mountains blinks at you the ice pyramid of mountain Karun Kuh (6,977 m asl) towering above the fabled valley Shimsal that fails to belong to the VIP group of six thousand high mountains by only a few meters.

Barren world

On the other side of the moraine you get to the barren world of mountains and rocks.

Ultar Sar

The right way to lake Borit leads from the moraine as close as possible to the rocky ridge. If you choose the side descent path, you can still link to the right path in the small pass under you. Lake Borit lies on the right under irrigational channel. If you go down by mistake through the valley to the left, it is again ok – you will come across KKH after a while and you are in 10 minutes in the village Husseini under the lake.

View of the rocky ridge is a beautiful from here – at the very right is the flat top of Ultar Sar (7 388 m asl), which you've probably already watched from the other side of Karimabad.

Lake Borit

If you went the right way, you came from the north along the lake. If you went from KKH, so you had to ascent from the main road one hundred altitude meters along a few twisted paths in the village Hussaini. It is best to continue up the trail to the moraine, from where there is a great view of lake Borit, huge lake Attabad below and the glacier surrounded by mighty peaks.

The eastern part of Batura Wall

From the moraine you can clearly see not only the lake Borit, but also the eastern end of the ridge Batura. On the left towers Ultar Sar and on the right Shispare Sar. If you have more time and the weather permits, it is ideal to go on the moraine into the interior of mountains as far as possible to enjoy other unforgettable views. In addition, the mountains are higher than you by five kilometers, so view is really monumental.

Attabad Lake and the village of Hussaini

The view down to the valley is also very picturesque – azure blue lake Attabad and oasis of village Hussaini. It is difficult to decide in which direction look earlier at this outlook point :-)

Passu Cathedral

From the moraine is also clearly visible Passu Cathedral towering on the horizon. It is the perfect place for taking panoramatic photos. If you don’t do that, you will probably regret it at home J

When you are satisfied with the views, you just need to run down to the road and stop a minibus running in the direction of Passu.
