This geothermal area connects the active tectonic region Leirhnjúkur and the active volcano Kraflu. The Leirbotn geothermal power plant is located here. The construction of the power plant had to be interrupted in 1975 due to the eruptions of Krafla volcano, and then worked at only half capacity for years. Only the newly commissioned wells helped the power plant to start up at full capacity, as evidenced by the loud noise of escaping steam.
