Blue eye
The „Blue Eye“ (Syri i Kaltër in Albanian) is a water spring and natural phenomenon found in the village of Muzinë in the municipality of Finiq in southern Albania. It is a popular tourist attraction and its clear blue water can be seen from a depth of more than fifty meters. Divers descended to a depth of fifty meters, but it is still unclear what the actual depth of the karst opening is.
This phenomenon is also known as the „springs of Bistricë“ because it is the initial source of water of the river Bistricë, 25 km long, which ends in the Ionian Sea south of Sarandë.
The immediate surroundings are a nature reserve characterized by oaks and plane trees. In the summer of 2004, the spring was temporarily dry.
The Modrá oko protected area was declared a natural monument, covering an area of 180 ha.
Entrance to the reservation is charged a couple of symbolic 15 lek, but we paid in euros, which they also accepted. Attention, they do not accept cards, yet.
The waters here are very icy with a temperature of 12°C. So swimming is for the hardy and even though it was banned in 2023, there are always a few brave people.
