Drive from Atlas to Ouarzazate

After you pass the turnoff to the old kasbas in Telouet and Anemiter, the small road descends on through the picturesque valley. The reddish rocks that surround the green oasis bordering the river flowing from High Atlas to Ouarzazate. It is one of the sources of the longest Moroccan river Draa. You will also pass the turnoff to perhaps the most famous Moroccan historic building Ait-Benhaddou.
 

At the village Melladi

The road leads high above the valley of the river along its western side from the turning to kasbas Telouet and Anemiter. And therefore you have in the afternoon lovely view of the oasis and steep wall of the mesa.

Village Melladi

Melladi (1 950 m asl) is one of the many typical villages and towns, you will see on your way through the foothills of High Atlas mountains.

Town Inkkal

After about twenty minutes driving you will see another interesting and beautiful place – small town Inkkal. This green oasis surrounded by nice lookout mountains would be worth a separate at least half-day trip.

Surroundings of Inkkal

Inkkal and surrounding villages in the valley are vitally dependent on water coming here from the High Atlas. There is the most water in the spring, when the snow melts in the highest parts.

Wadi

The river has here essentially character of Wadi, a seasonal stream which is usually completely dry in the summer.

Road N9

You will drive the whole time along good-quality road N9 from Marrakech to Ouarzazate. On the horizon in front of you will be the mesa surrounding this valley with height higher than two thousand meters above sea level.

Once you arrive to the surroundings of Tazentoute, the landscape widens and before and you will be a huge oasis.

Table mountains

The last part of the journey to Ouarzazate requires crossing of the upland desert plains (about 1,200 m asl) with several smaller mesas.
