Climbing a hill with a huge quarry
Although Střelečská Hůra is one of the highest hills of the Czech Paradise, and from several viewpoints it looks really dominant, it is undoubtedly one of the least visited peaks around Jičín. The trip is therefore more for more adventurous individuals, who will also want to climb the local basalt quarry outside the summit.
Landmark - waterworks building
The ideal start of the ascent is at the junction „Under Strělečská hórou“. Here the main red hiking trail touches the road and the yellow trail joins it. So head into the forest following the red sign in the direction of Mladějov. Exactly 320 meters from the crossroads, a wider, half-overgrown road turns to the right. You can tell if you are going right after 150 meters because you will come to a small waterworks building. From there, you will follow a narrower well-trodden footpath.
Under the top of Strelecská Hůra
From the waterworks, the path descends slightly to a small saddle, from where the path leads directly to the top. The surrounding forest is almost like a fairy tale.
The view from the top
The view from the top is pretty limited, but it's nice to see in a western direction, so you're sure to recognize a lot of familiar hills on the horizon. The view is dominated by Trosky and the huge sand quarry in Střeleč
Basalt rocks
Around the top are the remains of a quarry. Be very careful not to crash/slide down here at all
Quarry walls
If you want to explore the quarry, head down the paths, most of them are quite steep and the terrain is slippery, so be careful not to go down on your ass. The quarry itself is vast and freely accessible. But it is ideal for a tour when the trees are leafless.
