A trip around a beautiful Austrian lake
Lake Achensee is rightly considered one of the most beautiful lakes in Austria. It is located northeast of the large city of Innsbruck in the Karwendel Mountains – a limestone part of the Alps. It has a very elongated shape and is a wonderful starting point for hikes and trips.
Achenseehof
The B181 road runs along the eastern part of the lake. There is only a hiking trail along the western part. We start in the town of Achenkirch north of the lake. The first possible stop is the Achenseehof, where there are two parking lots, a church and a boat dock
The western shore of Lake Achensee
At Achensee it is nicely divided – the west bank is wild there is only a hiking trail / about 8km /. However, it is possible to go over the peaks (crossing Seekarspitze (2053m) – Seebergspitze (2085m)) not only along the water. On the east bank there are cars on the new road and there is a bike path closer to the old one by the water
Famous view of Achensee and Karwendel
The road from the Achenseehof disappears in a tunnel after a while, then passes a turn to the campsite – Camping Schwarzenau, and finally there is a beautiful view of the lake and the peaks of the Karwendel mountains by the road. It is definitely worth stopping and enjoying here
View of Pertisau and Zwölferkopf (1491 m)
The town of Pertisau is known for its beautiful mountain scenery. Right behind it is a smaller hill Zwölferkopf (1491 m), which leads to the cable car and has a beautiful view of the lake.
South of Lake Achensee
Towns and villages with many accommodation options can be found in the south of the lake – Buchau, Rofangarten or Maurach. However, the most famous is Pertisau in the southwest of the lake

Picturesque Pertisau
Pertisau is probably the most famous town on Lake Achensee. From here you can continue on a toll road into the Karwendel Mountains.
