The northern finger of the Halkidiki peninsula is called Athos. Greece (and also ordinary tourists) belongs only to its western part from Lerissos to Ouranopoli, where the asphalt road ends. The rest is occupied by the monastic state of Agios Oros – Holy Mountain, where women are forbidden to enter and men can only come here on special permission. There are many beautiful monasteries in the monastic state. Some of them can be viewed from the sea on popular boat trips.
