There is a great opportunity to enjoy this beautiful place after an easy half-day walk from Lo Manthang to Tsarang. Tsarang has many chortens, Buddhist temple (gompa) and the old fort (dzong). Some buildings are renovated, but others almost ruined. The surrounding landscape full of cliffs and rocks offers breathtaking scenery.
 

Old fort

The old fort is a massive building on the rock cliff. It looks, as most of the fortresses, rather inaccessible. We're lucky – we meet a local monk and he allows us come in for a small contribution to reconstruction… it is very interesting, old, full of history, authentic and sometimes almost scary…

Surroundings of Tsarang

Deep notch of Charang Khola river mouth in a few kilometers to even greater chasm, on the bottom of which hums the waters of Kali Gandaki.

At the end of the cliff on which stands the old fort is a ruined chorten. Prayer flags resist the sharp afternoon breeze. Mountain river roars somewhere deep below us.

Tsarang – courtyard of the temple

We are alone at the spacious courtyard. There is silence, only from the interior of mysterious Buddhist temple you can here prayers accompanied by occasional sound of drums and pipes.

Village Tsarang

It seems that time has stopped here and people still live here the old way. Now in August is nature friendly, but the life must be difficult here in winter.

Rough but beautiful

The surrounding countryside is full of folds, rock formations and steep cliffs. It offers hundreds of caves built for religious and other reasons. The vast majority of them is not accessible and has never been explored.
